LOVERS OF THE NILE

“The golden light of dusk gilded the palm fronds, O Nile… a masterpiece, your reflection holds the image… The flute played on the shore, and graceful forms swayed in the breeze… O Nile, my beloved and I resemble your clarity… For your breeze softened our hearts, and the purity of our love mirrors your own…” —Bayram al-Tunisi, in the voice of Umm Kulthum So begins Lovers of the Nile—a story that has echoed since the dawn of time. Along its eternal banks, our ancestors built the magnificent civilization of the Nile Valley. To this day, the river carries tales of human greatness, dignity, and beauty. It remains a source of love, life, and sensory wonder—for who among us does not count themselves among the lovers of the Nile? From sea to river, my artistic journey meanders through the Egyptian landscape, guided by a romantic, dreamlike imagination. Through a visual language of form and color, I search for the tenderness of emotion and the sweetness of nature—standing in contrast to the dominance of our concrete modernity. Joining me in these visual reveries are the protagonists of my inner world: brightly colored Egyptian wooden puppets. They evoke childhood joy, a longing for folk memory, and the innocence of the past. These figures animate each composition, rendered in silver, gold, grey, and layered greens—each color charged with symbolic depth. The silver tones especially invite the viewer into a space of movement and quiet vitality, as the image becomes ever-shifting, ever-living. This exhibition presents a series of works using intaglio (zinc) and lithographic techniques. I begin with a single form, then introduce personal variations—what printmakers call artist’s proofs. Much like Umm Kulthum’s famed refrains—repeated but never the same—each version expresses a new mood, a different sensibility, played on the same visual string. One scene glows with nocturnal delight: boats adorned with colored lights dance on the Nile’s surface in a state of ongoing celebration. Their reflections ripple with rhythm, light, and visual pleasure. As with my past exhibitions, Lovers of the Nile offers a quiet invitation: to return to nature, to reconnect with beauty and roots. It is a psychological response to the turbulence and pressures of modern life. As if the great river still flows with blessing and breath—for its children, and for all who remain faithful to its presence. Adel Moustafa

أحبابُ النيل " شمس الأصيل دَهَّبِت خوص النخيل يا نيل.. تحفة، ومتصَوَّرَه في صفحتك يا جميل.. والناي على الشط غنَّىٰ والقُدود بتمِيل.. على هُبوب الهوا لمَّا يمُر عليل.. يا نيل أنا واللِّي احِبُّه نشبهَك في صفاك.. لانِت ورَقِّت قلوبنا لمَّا رَق هواك.. وصفوِنا في المحبة هُوَّ هُوَّ صَفاك " من هذا المعنَى العذب للشاعر بيرم التونسي، وبصوت مصر الخالد أم كلثوم، تبدأ حكاية أحباب النيل، تلك الحكاية التي تتكرر منذ بداية التاريخ، فعلى ضفاف النيل بَنَى أجدادُنا العُظماء حضارة وادي النيل العظيمة، ومازال يحكي لنا هذا النهر الخالد قصصاً للمجد ولتفوق وسمو الإنسانة.. ومنه دائماً الحُب والحياة، وعلى ضِفافِهِ المتعة الوجدانية والبصرية.. فمَن فينا لا يعتبر نفسُه من أتباع وأحباب النيل!! ومِن البحر إلى النهر تنتقل تجربتي الفنية، متجولاً بين ربوع المشهد المصري الجميل، مسافراً بذلك الخيال الرومانسي الحالِم.. والذي أبحث فيه دائماً بواسطة اللُغة البصرية التشكيلية عن بكرية العاطفة وعذوبة الطبيعة في مقابل سطوة الحضارة الخرسانية المعاصرة.. ويصحبني دائماً في تلك الرحلات التشكيلية الممتعة أبطال عالمي الخاص، من العرائس الخشبية المصرية الطابع زاهية الألوان، التي تذكرنا ببراءة الماضي والحنين للحالة المصرية الشعبية وتوقظ سعادة الطفولة بداخلنا.. وعرائس النيل هنا تعايش المشاهد في تنوعها وثرائها ما بين الألوان الفضية والذهبية والرمادية والأخضر بتنويعاته ودلالاته، والفضي هنا يلعب دوراً هاماً في تفاعل المتلقي للعمل، فاللوحة في حالة من التغير الدائم والحياة المستمرة.. في تجربة جديدة ضمن هذا المعرض مجموعة من التجارب في تقنيات الطباعة الغائرة (زينك) والطباعة الحجرية (ليثوجراف) لعمل شكل واحد ويتم التنويع عليه بواسطة لمسات وإضافات من الفنان فيما يُعرف ب (artist’s proof)، وكأنني أقوم بالعزف المتنوع على وَتَر واحد، وأتذكر هُنا تغريدات (السِت أم كلثوم) عندما كانت تكرر الجملة الواحدة مرات عديدة وفي كل مرة طعم وحالة وإحساس جديد على نفس الجملة الواحدة. نجد أيضاً حالة ليلية مُبهجة في تلألؤ إضاءات المراكب بإضاءاتها المُلوَّنَة الجميلة، وكأنها في حالة عُرس واحتفال دائم، وهي تغازل صفحة النيل بانعكاسات الألوان وذبذبات ونغمات في غاية الرقة والمتعة البصرية. وفي معرض "أحباب النيل" والعروض السابقة دعوة ورسالة متصلة للاستمتاع بالمشهد الحالم الرومانسي والعودة للطبيعة والجذور، في مواجهة نفسية لما يدور حولنا من صراعات وما نواجهُه يوميا من ضغوط حياتيه، وكأن النيل العظيم يواصل مدادَه ونفحاتَه لأبنائهِ وأحبابِه. عادل مصطفى
