LIMONATA

In this exhibition, Soraya Fahmy returns to nature as an inexhaustible reservoir of stories, choosing the lemon—fruit, tree, and symbol—as the axis of an artistic and research-based journey that unfolded over two full years. A journey that did not stop at form or color, but delved beneath the surface: into history, medicine, myths, folk sayings, songs, rituals, and everyday products that shaped Egyptian collective memory—among them, for example, the iconic Spiro Spathis soda and the beloved 555 cologne. The exhibition brings together paintings, sculptures, and spatial installations, where research becomes material, and information transforms into visual imagination. We see the lemon, touch it through textures, and sense its presence in the air. Yellow floods the space—not merely as a color, but as a psychological state—while the scent of lemon becomes an integral part of the experience, not a secondary element. As in her previous works, Soraya Fahmy practices her own kind of surrealism: a surrealism rooted in reality, in overlooked details, in nature when we slow down and truly look. Here, as in her earlier exhibition “Fungi”, she does not present her subject as self-evident. Instead, she dismantles it, gives it another voice, and invites the viewer to discover what they had not noticed before. Limonata is not simply an exhibition about lemons. It is about our ability to listen to simple things when we give them time, research, and imagination. ليموناتا.. لفظ إيطالي خفيف، منعش، يوقظ الحواس يحمل ضمنًا طعمًا ولونًا ورائحة. كلمة عبرت الثقافات، واستقرت في الوجدان الشعبي المصري لتصبح لأحد أشهر المشروبات، وذاكرة صيف، وإحساسًا بالانتعاش والحياة. في هذا المعرض، تعود ثريا فهمي إلى الطبيعة بوصفها خزانًا لا ينضب للحكايات، وتختار الليمون - ثمرةً وشجرةً ورمزًا - محورًا لرحلة فنية وبحثية امتدت على مدار عامين كاملين. رحلة لم تتوقف عند الشكل أو اللون، بل غاصت إلى ما وراء السطح: في التاريخ، والطب، والأساطير، والأمثال الشعبية، والأغاني، والطقوس، والمنتجات اليومية التي صنعت جزءًا من الذاكرة المصرية ومن بينها على سبيل المثال لا الحصر مشروب سبيروسباتس وكولونيا خمس خمسات التي عشقها المصريون. تتنوع أعمال المعرض بين لوحات ومجسمات وتجهيزات فراغية، حيث يتحول البحث إلى مادة، والمعلومة إلى خيال بصري. نرى الليمون ونلمسه في الخامات، ونشم حضوره في الفضاء. اللون الأصفر يفيض في القاعة، لا بوصفه لونًا فحسب، بل حالة نفسية، بينما تنتشر رائحة الليمون لتصبح جزءًا من التجربة، لا عنصرًا مكمّلًا لها. وكما في تجاربها السابقة، تمارس ثريا فهمي نوعها الخاص من السريالية: سريالية نابعة من الواقع، من التفاصيل المهمَلة، من الطبيعة حين نعيد النظر إليها ببطء وتأمل. هنا، كما في معرضها السابق "عيش الغراب"، لا تقدم الفنانة موضوعها بوصفه بديهيًا، بل تعيد تفكيكه، وتمنحه صوتًا آخر، وتدعو المتلقي إلى اكتشاف ما لم يكن يراه. "ليموناتا" ليس معرضًا عن الليمون فقط، بل عن قدرتنا على الإصغاء للأشياء البسيطة حين نمنحها الوقت والبحث والخيال. هو دعوة للانتعاش، لا بمعناه الحسي وحده، بل بوصفه فعل اكتشاف، واحتفاء بالحياة. ناهدة الخوري قاعة الزمالك للفن Limonata—a light, refreshing Italian word that awakens the senses, carrying within it a taste, a color, and a scent. A word that crossed cultures and settled into the Egyptian popular imagination, becoming associated with one of the most beloved drinks, with summer memories, and with a feeling of vitality and renewal.
