GIFTS OF THE SEA

Curatorial Statement

In this exhibition, “Gifts of the Sea”, Mostafa El Razzaz casts the fish as the central protagonist—a vibrant addition to a recurring list of figures that have long accompanied his creative journey, including the bird, the horse, the plant, and the woman. With this new emblem, the fish, and the steadfast boat that has carried him through countless realms of imagination, El Razzaz invites us to step into a vibrant tapestry of wonder and magic. Surrounded by sketches and drawings that echo his past experiences, the artist embarks on this new voyage by delving into the lives of fishermen. Although El Razzaz has explored the theme of fishing before—most notably in an exhibition celebrating the women who fished in the Nile—his current take on it is distinct. Here, he abandons the grim depictions of life at sea, opting instead for a lyrical celebration of the deep bond between humanity and the ocean's marvels. El Razzaz’s exhibitions build upon one another to form a cohesive narrative that explores the interplay between cultural heritage and the natural world. Each instalment revisits familiar symbols while introducing fresh perspectives that challenge us to reimagine tradition in a another perspective. In “Gifts of the Sea”, the relationship between humans and fish is transformed into a symbol of hope and abundance. Rather than presenting the fish as mere catch, he reimagines them as compassionate companions and guides. In some pieces, when humans find themselves ensnared by traps and nets, it is the fish—with their clear, gleaming eyes—that emerge as saviours, leading them toward salvation. In popular culture, these luminous eyes are a sign of vitality, a trait that El Razzaz imbues in his fantastical portrayals. El Razzaz redefines the role of fish in his work. Rather than presenting them as mere objects of consumption, he transforms these creatures into dynamic figures that interact with human characters, imbuing his narrative with layers of myth and symbolism. His canvases and sculptures intertwine time-honoured Egyptian iconography with contemporary motifs, creating a dialogue that bridges past and present. Each piece, whether rendered in paint or carved in form, stands as a testament to his innovative vision and a celebration of the ocean’s enduring, life-giving bounty. Mona Abdel Karim

اختار الفنان مصطفى الرزاز السمكة بطلاً أساسياً بمعرضه الحالي "رزق البحر" لتضاف إلى الأبطال الذين رافقوه في رحلته الإبداعية؛ العصفور والحصان والنبتة والمرأة، وكأنه يعيد اكتشاف عالم جديد تقوده سمكته المسحورة وقاربه الذي أبحر به في عوالم الإبداع لسنوات طويلة. يستعيد الرزاز كل ما مر به بينما يفرد أوراقه ورسوماته كلها على طاولة مرسمه مستعداً لخوض تجربته الجديدة "رزق البحر" التي يتناول فيها حياة الصيادين وهي ليست المرة الأولى التي يقدم فيها موضوع الصيد وإن اختلف التناول، فقد سبق وأن قدم معرضاً كاملاً عن الصيد في النيل وكانت بطلاته من النساء اللاتي مارسن حرفة الصيد.. وكعادة الرزاز فإن لمعارضه سمة تراكمية بالامتداد في عمق الزمن ليبدو كل منها وكأنه فصل في رواية مكتملة، فلكل معرض جذور ممتدة في تجربته تنمو مع الوقت وتتشعب وتفتح أمامه أبواب جديدة من الرؤى السحرية.. في معرضه الحالي يركز الرزاز على علاقة الإنسان بالسمكة ولكنه يميل لجعلها حالة رومانتيكية تناغمية، تبتعد عن تسجيل دراما الواقع التي لمسها في حياة الصيادين الفعلية.. يظهر كثير من أبطال لوحاته يحتضنون سمكاتهم، باعتبارها رمزاً للخير والعطاء وليست مجرد صيد.. إذ تتحول السمكة في "رزق البحر" لرفيق ومرشد، بل أننا نرى أن الإنسان قد يقع في الفخ ويسقط في الشبك وتنفلت السمكة منه لتقوده للخلاص بعيونها الصافية اللامعة، وفي الثقافة الشعبية فإن عيون السمك اللامعة تدل على الحيوية، وأسماك الرزاز ليست للاستهلاك وإنما هي جزء من حالة فانتزية ساحرة تشارك الإنسان البطولة.. وكما تتضافر عناصر اللوحة، فإن في أعمال الرزاز حالة تشابك بين مفردات الثقافة المصرية عبر امتداد التاريخ، وصولاً للثقافة الشعبية.. وهو ما نراه بتأمل لوحاته ومنحوتاته.. يفاجئنا الرزاز من جديد بتلك الحيوية المدهشة والإنتاج الإبداعي المتدفق سواء في التصوير أو النحت مؤكداً أنه بلا شك كان له نصيب كبير من رزق البحر..منى عبدالكريم
