Gazbia Sirry's Centennial
This exhibition marks the centennial of Gazbia Sirry’s birth. It is not only a special occasion to revisit her extraordinary body of work—works that have secured her place as one of the great figures of modern art—but also an opportunity to draw closer to the essence of her humanity. Here, we sought to look beyond the canvases: to reflect on her photographs, to gather the objects and mementos that surrounded her, to step into her world. For what we wished most was to be in the company of her free spirit, unbound and unrestrained. In this way, we celebrate not only her birthday, but also the friendship she gifted us, and the deeply human ties that went far beyond her dazzling art. Our relationship with Gazbia stretched nearly three decades. During that time, we exchanged countless stories and shared unforgettable moments—memories that revealed her rare generosity of spirit, her inner independence, and her luminous vision. She was always present, and remains so: everywhere we turn, we feel her trace, enduring and indelible. Gazbia carried a flame that never dimmed. She stood as a model of true freedom and of acceptance—acceptance of the “other,” different yet equal—with a generosity that was as rare as it was profound. She taught us that art cannot be separated from life, and that friendship itself may be one of creativity’s purest forms. This exhibition, then, is far more than a tribute to her global artistic legacy. It is a celebration of the bonds of friendship, and a testament to her humanity, which remains with us still. As we move through her works, we find ourselves once again walking beside her, reliving those moments, and whispering: You are still here with us, present in your freedom, in your honesty, in our hearts, and in the memory of Egyptian and world art.
